The Chief Primary Care Medical Officer: Restoring Continuity
The Chief Primary Care Medical Officer (CPCMO) is an emerging physician leadership position focused on improving continuity for the patients of hospital based health care systems. Continuity, the essence of primary care, drives value. However, this continuity is inadvertently undermined by the hospitalist movement which may lead to primary care connection disruption at the hospital door. The CPCMO can help make health care whole again, increasing accessible, comprehensive and coordinated care and driving better outcomes at lower cost. This webinar will describe the work done by the CPCMO, provide financial justification for the role, describe some leaders working in these roles now and suggest areas of future development. Our speakers are Dr. Noemi Doohan from Adventist Health Ukiah Valley CA and Dr. Saria Saccocio from Greenvile Health System SC.
Noemi Doohan MD PhD is a board certified family physician with a doctorate in molecular biology, who is the program director of a new, rural family medicine residency program at Adventist Health Ukiah Valley. This residency program, which will launch in July 2019, in partnership with UC Davis, will train primary care physicians to practice full scope family medicine: for all ages, in and out of the hospital. As a hospitalist with a primary care practice, Dr Doohan practices full scope family medicine, with an emphasis on complex care including street medicine, “Hotspotting” for high need high cost patients, and global health.
Saria Carter Saccocio, MD, FAAFP, MHA is Ambulatory Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and Department Chair of Family Medicine for Greenville Health System. Before joining GHS, Dr. Saccocio served as CMO at Bon Secours St. Francis Health System in Greenville. During her tenure there, Truven Health Analytics named the system one of the 100 Top Hospitals for achieving lower mortality rates, fewer complications, shorter patient stays and reduced readmission rates. In addition, Becker’s Hospital Review recognized Dr. Saccocio as among the top 100 Hospital and Health System CMOs to Know for 2016 and 2017.
