SUMMARY

Harvard University, the oldest institution of higher education in the United States, is a world-class research university known for its global leadership in education, scholarship, and ground-breaking research. The University consists of the undergraduate Harvard College, 11 graduate and professional schools, and the Harvard Radcliffe Institute. The main campus is located along the Charles River in Cambridge and Allston, Massachusetts while the medical, dental, and public health schools are located in Boston at the heart of the Longwood Medical Area. Unlike many other major universities, the Harvard-affiliated medical centers, including Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Beth Israel Medical Center, Boston Children’s Hospital, and others, are independent organizations not owned or operated by the University.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Harvard University Health Services (HUHS) seeks an energetic, innovative, collaborative physician leader to serve as Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and Physician in Chief (PiC). The Chief Medical Officer/Physician in Chief will lead and manage medical care provided to Harvard University students, faculty, and staff. The CMO/PiC will also play a significant role in developing a sustainable model of care and enhancing the overall wellbeing of the diverse Harvard community in a manner that prioritizes equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging.

THE POSITION

Reporting to the Executive Director and Associate Provost for Campus Health and Wellbeing, the Chief Medical Officer/Physician in Chief will be a key member of the Harvard University Health Services’ senior leadership team. In collaboration with senior leaders of the organization, the CMO/PiC leads and participates in strategic projects and initiatives to achieve goals and objectives in the management of the delivery system, and engages in problem solving, and long-range planning. The CMO/PiC is responsible for the delivery of high standard, cost effective medical care in a manner that incorporates values of equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging. Responsibilities include planning and directing the functioning of Internal Medicine, Urgent Care, Faculty and Staff Behavioral Health, Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety, Credentialing, Care Coordination, Physical Therapy, and all other Medical and Surgical Specialties. The CMO/PiC supervises 14 individual direct reports and is responsible for the performance of a staff of approximately 46 FTE/60 individuals. The CMO/PiC fulfills a 20% practice effort while devoting approximately 80% effort to clinical, administrative, and strategic leadership.
