Harvard University Health Services | Cambridge, MA
Harvard University, the oldest institution of higher education in the United States, is a world-class research university known for its global leadership in education, scholarship, and ground-breaking research. The University consists of the undergraduate Harvard College, 11 graduate and professional schools, and the Harvard Radcliffe Institute. The main campus is located along the Charles River in Cambridge and Allston, Massachusetts while the medical, dental, and public health schools are located in Boston at the heart of the Longwood Medical Area. Unlike many other major universities, the Harvard-affiliated medical centers, including Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Beth Israel Medical Center, Boston Children’s Hospital, and others, are independent organizations not owned or operated by the University.
Harvard University Health Services (HUHS) seeks an engaged, energetic, and curious problem-solver and relationship-builder to serve as Deputy Executive Director and Chief Administrative Officer (DED/CAO). The DED will partner closely with the Executive Director and extend his capacity to support the teams that make HUHS work. Many changes are underway at HUHS, all designed to enable the practice to better meet the needs of the Harvard community and to do so in a sustainable manner. The DED/CAO will bring financial and analytical sophistication as well as regard for the experience of patients and staff to the task of developing a sustainable model of care and enhancing the overall wellbeing of the diverse Harvard community in a manner that prioritizes equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging. Reporting to the Executive Director and Associate Provost for Campus Health and Wellbeing, the new DED/CAO will be a key member of the HUHS senior leadership team, charged with better integrating the financial and clinical components of the care model. The DED/CAO oversees 12 direct reports who include leaders of all non-clinical domains, and a budget of $165 million. HUHS is staffed by 225 FTEs/300 individuals.
Reporting to the Associate Provost and Executive Director, the Deputy Executive Director and Chief Administrative Officer is a key member of the senior leadership team of HUHS, providing strategic operational and financial expertise and direction to key functions and relationships. The DED/CAO will be a critical hire for the Executive Director who has a mandate to re-envision the scope and manner of services provided by HUHS. The DED/CAO is responsible for supporting and mentoring the leaders who report to them, as well as effectively coordinating and helping to prioritize their work to optimize the efficiency of operations, planning, and implementation of organizational goals and new initiatives. The DED/CAO will ensure that HUHS is meeting the goals and objectives set out by University leaders and works collaboratively with groups from across the University, including Human Resources and the Benefits Office, the Office of Financial Strategy and Planning, the University Controller, Harvard University Information Technology, the Office of General Counsel, Harvard Public Affairs & Communications, Risk Management & Audit Services, Administrative Deans at each of the schools, and representatives from graduate and undergraduate student groups.
