SUMMARY

The mission of the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department is to improve the health of its communities by preventing disease, promoting wellness and health equity, while ensuring access to needed health care, and maintaining a safe and healthy environment. With a staff of 529 and a budget of approximately $100 million, the Department serves a population of about 447,000 residents. In addition to the vibrant health center program, the Public Health Department’s responsibilities include the investigation of disease outbreaks, conduct of health education campaigns, inspection of food establishments, work with high-risk mothers and children, staffing medical shelters during emergency evacuations, and caring for pets through the animal control program, along with an array of other programs and services.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The Santa Barbara County Public Health Department seeks a Medical Director to lead the medical supervision of the Department’s Primary Care and Family Health Division. As the Division’s senior physician, the Medical Director plays a critical role in communicating and translating between staff with a reputation for exemplary clinical practice and administrative leadership with an ambitious vision to better meet the needs of the diverse Santa Barbara County community. THE POSITION

Reporting to the Public Health Director of Santa Barbara County and working in partnership with the Primary Care and Family Health Division’s Deputy Director, the Medical Director will lead a team of four supervisory physicians overseeing a staff of 30 plus physicians, nurse practitioners, and other support staff employed in various health clinics. The Medical Director oversees all clinical services of the health centers and ensures oversight and compliance with local, state and federal mandates to achieve organizational goals and requirements. This position also    oversees employee relations matters, staff development, and physician recruitment and retention.
