Challenges in Behavioral Healthcare and Substance Abuse Treatment
Behavioral healthcare/substance abuse care is becoming more visible and more highly integrated into care delivered by hospitals and other healthcare organizations. Easier said than done—multiple issues arise when trying to operationalize this integration, including restructuring inpatient, ambulatory and emergency care delivery, the shortage of qualified providers, and the increased need for substance abuse services fueled by the opioid epidemic.
Our speakers, Thomas Souliotis and Linda Mynahan from Applied Management Systems (AMS) have extensive hands on experience in this area and share insights and lessons learned. Linda Mynahan RN, MSN, NEA-BC, & Certified Lean Professional, has more than 30 years of clinical and leadership experience in healthcare. Linda’s clinical practice is in critical care with leadership experience in variety of roles including unit management, clinical director, performance improvement and regulatory compliance, with more recent AMS assignments as interim chief nursing officer at a state psychiatric hospital and interim director of emergency services.
Thomas P. Souliotis, Vice President at AMS, has over 30 years’ experience as a health care professional. This includes serving as both an interim CEO and COO at a state psychiatric hospital. Tom has also acted as Interim CEO in a financially distressed municipal hospital working with City, State and Federal agencies to transition the facility to a state legislatively created Hospital Authority. Developing a constructive external relationship with the City, State and Federal officials, Tom was able to avoid a significant financial burden on the City along with creating a positive environment with State and Federal officials to maintain healthcare including Behavioral Health services to the community.
