Poll Results on What Torpedoes Leaders
At a recent ZurickDavis Webinar, our speakers, Jayne Oliva from the Croes-Oliva Group and John Schreiber MD from Baystate Health, polled the audience about the top easy to avoid organizational mistake that can torpedo medical leaders. The leading answer—from half of the healthcare leaders who were Webinar participants—was trying to squeeze a full-time job into a part-time position. As a society, we’ve become besotted with the concept of productivity, multi-tasking and doing more with less. Unfortunately, this concept can be contorted to justify unrealistic situations that lead to failure. The second most common mistake cited by the audience was to hire a soloist when you need a conductor. As an example, the physician with the most publications or the highest volume is often not the best leader for a department or a practice. Our speakers also asked the audience about more nuanced mistakes made by organizations that can torpedo leaders. This type of issue might not initially be evident in the position description. Failure to define success was the top vote of 39% of the Webinar audience, while skimping on support resources was second at 24%. Vague expectations lead to dissatisfaction for both leaders and organizations.
