Steve brings more than 25 years of expertise and experience as a clinician, organizational leader and health care consultant and coach. Through his work with ZDmd, he is able to pursue his professional mission of enhancing the effectiveness of physician leaders and leadership structures in health care organizations. ZDmd clients benefit from his deep understanding of clinical practice, organizational design and the dimensions of leadership skills and character required in today’s complex health care environment.
A pediatric hematologist-oncologist by training, Steve practiced sub-specialty medicine from 1981 to 1994. During that period, he co-founded and served as the first CEO and Medical Director of the Maine Children’s Cancer Program and was affiliated with the Pediatric Oncology Group and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Also during that period, he held planning and leadership positions at Maine Medical Center, a 600-bed tertiary community teaching hospital.
Steve has been involved in health care management consulting since 1994. He was a senior consultant at two national health care firms, and is the founding principal of exagoMD, a health care advisory, coaching and consulting practice. Steve’s consulting clients have included academic medical centers, large community teaching hospitals and health systems, regional hospitals and health systems and large medical groups. He also has experience consulting to industry, managed care organizations and rural health and government agencies.
He is a graduate of Cornell University, SUNY at Buffalo School of Medicine and SUNY at Buffalo Graduate School. He completed his MBA at Boston University School of Management. His residency and fellowship training were at the Maine Medical Center and University of Rochester/Strong Memorial Hospital, respectively.
